Antonis Dalgas, as he is best known, was already an established singer when he arrived in Greece after the 1922-’23 population exchange with Turkey. He quickly became part of the rebetiko scene.
The Asia Minor style songs he had been singing (many of which have become classics of Greek music), formed the basis of the Smyerneika rebetiko style, but he also quickly adapted his distinctive voice to the bouzouki-driven Piraeus style.
As well as recording dozens and dozens of songs, he began writing rebetiko pieces such as The Baglama Broke, the lyrics of which are soaked in the slang of the rebetes and mangas. (Note: There is a fuller biography of Dalgas below the video at YouTube.)
