Daizy Stavropoulou came to the scene late in the classic era of rebetiko.
After World War II, she recorded a couple of songs when studios reopened, but then she walked away: she got married and her husband didn’t want her recording.
Stavropoulou was born in the Peloponnese, and arrived in Athens in the midst of rebetiko’s golden age. She met and fell for Anestis Delias and took him to Thessaloniki in an attempt to deal with his on-and-off heroin addiction.
While she was there, she met Vasilis Tsitsanis, who convinced her to start recording. Her deep, somewhat rough voice set her apart from other female singers at the time, and she worked with many rebetiko musicians, singers and composers before World War II.
Her discography lists only 27 songs, most recorded in 1940. My Princess was written by Panayiotos Tountas (words) and Kosmas Kosmadopoulos.
