Between 1936 and 1940, Yiorgos Kavouras cut 70 tracks, 50 of them written by Kostas Skarvelis. Kavouras was active on the rebetiko scene before 1936, but not as a singer.
He was born on the island of Kastellorizo into a musical family and learned to play santouri, violin and guitar. It was as an instrumentalist that he first recorded in Athens, supporting such singers as Stellakis Peripiniades.
Reportedly, when Peripiniades heard Kavouras sing at a rehearsal, he convinced him to start recording as a vocalist. The result was a solid collection of rebetiko classics. Kavouras died of a stroke at age 36 during the occupation of Athens. I Hurt and You Don’t Pity Me, recorded in 1937, was written by Skarvelis.
