Apostolos Hatzichristos: The Complainer

Three musicians playing stringed instruments.

Apostolos Hatzichristos was one of a number of young musicians who emerged near the end of the classic era of rebetiko and had a long and successful career as a talented bouzouki player and expressive singer.

His first recording was in 1938, several years after he started performing as a singer and bouzouki player, including a stint in Markos Vamvakaris’s Quartet of Piraeus. Hatzichristos continued to perform through the occupation of Athens (while also working with the resistance) and into the 1950s before dying of lung cancer run 1959.

He appeared on more than 125 rebetiko recordings as a vocalist – often working with other singer such as Vamvakaris – and recorded 85 of his own compositions, many of them now standards in the rebetiko repertoire.

The Complainer was recorded in 1940.
