I haven’t been able to find out much about Marika Kanaropoulou, who recorded a number of now standard rebetiko songs in the 1930s, including this one.
She was apparently born into a family of musicians in Asia Minor. (Her stage name was Marika Tourkalitsa – Marika the Turkish woman.) She appeared on record for the first time in Athens in 1933, and between then and 1940, she recorded 19 more songs, written by the major composers of the time.
In the immediate pre-war periods he emigrated to the U.S. and there is no evidence she continued to record there.
Inside Manthos’s Tavern, one of the chasiklidika rebetiko songs (songs dealing with smoking hash), was written by Kostas Tzovenos and recorded in 1934.
