Haralambos Panagis, also known as Haralambos Petropoulos, appears in the rebetiko discography only a dozen times or so, and about half of those were recordings of him singing amanes.
Biographical details are scant, other than that he was born near Smyrna, and was a popular entertainer at weddings, parties, taverns and the like. Among his recordings were at least two that have become rebetiko standards – The Smuggler, and Eleni, The Young Bride. Two of his amanes were produced on the B side of a 7-inch extended play record, with Kostas Roukounas singing two amanes on the A side. And notably, his recording of Rast Manes was one of the few early rebetiko songs recorded outside the U.S. to feature clarinet as the main instrument.
The Smuggler, written by Giorgos Kamvysis, was recorded in 1934.
