Agathonas Iakovidis: Drunk and Stoned

The reappearance of classic rebetiko in the 1970s was led by a generation of singers and players who dug into the old recordings to recreate that era. One of those was Agathonas Iakovidis.

Born in Thessaloniki to parents who were refugees from Asia Minor, he was self-taught on guitar, baglama, bouzouki and other stringed instruments. He started performing in 1973 and four years later created the groundbreaking rebetiko revival group Rebetiko Syngrotima Thessaloniki.

After a stint in Athens, where he played with many of the leading musicians, he returned to Thessaloniki, which was his base until his death in 2020. He toured extensively, including concerts in Europe and the U.S., recorded and appeared regularly on Greek music TV shows.

While this discography is heavy on rebetiko, he also recorded folk songs. This is his recording of Anestis Delias’s classic Drunk and Stoned.
